Electronic letters published : Multiple Mechanisms in the VEP

چکیده
Email Hans Strasburger, et al. We decidedly agree with the conclusion of Souza et al.1 about the operation of two separate mechanisms in the VEP. We came in fact to a very similar conclusion in a paper in 1993 in Clinical Vision Sciences2 (available from our Web site). We there ascribed the non-linear, dichotomous characteristics of the VEP to putative sustained and transient mechanisms. The most likely underlying neural substrate for these mechanisms are the parvo (sustained) and magno (transient) streams as Souza et al. indicate. Of course currently, it is thought that the magno pathway is composed of some neurons with transient and others with more sustained characteristics. Magno neurons have high contrast gain and this is seen in the VEP data.

The Effect of Oral Verapamil on the Visual Evoked Potentials in Definite Multiple Sclerosis Patients
Introduction: Ionic channel rearrangements through the demyelinated axons or supporting media play significant role in remission of the neurological deficit in MS patients. In this study the effects of Verapamil as a calcium channel blocker on central conduction have been investigated through the evaluation of changes in P100 latency of the visual evoked potential. Method: This randomized doubl...

متن کاملفراوانی پتانسیلهای برانگیخته غیر طبیعی در مالتیپل اسکلروزیس: مطالعه مقطعی در 25 بیمار
Background: Visual, brain stem auditory and somatosensory evoked potentials (EPs) have been traditional paraclinical tests to evaluate the competency of sensory tracts in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. It seems that only one of these EPs could be sufficient, at least as a screening test. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the frequency of these three evoked potentials in definite MS ...
متن کاملتعیین ارتباط یافتههای VEP و SSEP باوجود دمانس در بیماران مبتلا به بیماری پارکینسون
Background & Aims: Parkinsonism occurs in all races. Its prevalence in the United States and Western Europe is 2.1 persons per 1,000 populations. Approximately one third of patients have cognitive problems that often doubles after 4 years in 80% of patients with dementia and Parkinson’s disease (PD) occurs in the final stages. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between vis...
متن کاملGuessing in Multiple Choice Questions: Challenges and Strategies
Introduction: Guessing is one of the most challenging issues in multiple choice questions. Several strategies, such as negative scoring, have been suggested for preventing students from choosing the right answer just by chance. However, there is no general agreement on using such strategies. The aim of this study was to review the scoring methods which are used for reducing guessing, and evalua...
